Allgäuer Bergkäse [AHL-goy-ear Bearg-kasa]
Allgäuer Bergkäse is the only "PDO" (Protected Designation of Origin) cheese from Germany imported to the U.S. It proudly bears the prestigious European PDO symbol.
Allgäuer Bergkäse is handmade from raw, silage free milk, which we get from cows happily grazing in the Allgäu Mountains. Naturally Allgäuer Bergkäse is named after this beautiful, rugged mountain region in the Southwest of Germany, the Allgäu. Bergkäse simply means mountain cheese.
This full flavored, firm artisan cheese has been made for hundreds of years and was even used as a very valuable trading tool back then. Still today our master cheese maker follows historic, authentic production methods to create this delicious "piece of art". A whole, handsome wheel weighs an average of 60 pounds. We also offer it in quarter wheels of 15 pounds.
