Hirtenkäse has won yet another Gold Medal at the recent 2007 World Cheese Awards

Hirtenkäse – is a full-flavored hard cheese, available in approximate weight 14 lb wheels. Our mountain cheese is nutty and rich, with a Swiss meets Parmesan flavor. It is lovingly handmade from pasteurized, silage-free (pastured/dried hay) mountain farmed (min. 2600 ft elev.) cows milk. Hirtenkäse is made in honor of our herdsmen in the Allgäu mountain region, who safely guide our cows down from the mountains to spend the winters in their cozy barns and are led back up to the Alps in the spring. We have a big traditional festival every fall called "Almabtrieb", which means herding the cows down from the mountains. The lead cow is decorated with flowers and the whole community joins in the celebrations – and in the meantime also many guests from around the world.
